Storytelling Project

This is the English part of the integrative assignment for the Journeys English and Humanities courses. (20 marks)

Choose two: Genre Analysis Study Questions (5%)

Short Fiction

Analyze a short story by an Indigenous writer, either one we have read in class or another of your choice that has been approved by the teacher. Make sure you address these questions:

  • How does this story incorporate traditional elements or teachings?
  • What aspect of contemporary Indigenous society does this story present?
  • Does this story articulate a conflict between Indinous and colonial societies?
  • How does this story relate to your own life?

Poetry

Listen to and/or read and analyze a poem by an Indigenous writer.

  • How does this poem incorporate traditional elements or teachings?
  • What aspect of contemporary Indigenous society does this poem present?
  • Does this poem articulate a conflict between Indigenous and colonial societies?
  • How does this poem relate to your own life?

Drama

Listen to, watch, and/or read and analyze a play by an Indigenous writer.

  • How does this play incorporate traditional elements or teachings?
  • What aspects of contemporary Indigenous society does this play present?
  • Does this play articulate a conflict between Indigenou and colonial societies?
  • How does this play relate to your own life?

Personal Story (10%)

Write own personal story on the theme of learning, whether formal schooling, traditional learning, or learning in some other way. Write in first person, with yourself as the protagonist. You are encouraged to include descriptive detail for setting and characterization, and to consider narrative structure. You might also consider using traditional elements or themes if appropriate. This first draft should be 500-750 words, typed and handed in on paper on Monday, November 14 (final deadline) at the start of class. It is worth 5%.

The second draft of this story can be told in any genre or medium: as spoken word performance, a personal essay, a blog, a comic strip, etc. You are welcome to discuss the possibilities with the teacher. This is due on Thursday, December 1 and is worth another 5%.

Self-Assessment in Reflective Writing (5%)

In a balanced way, reflect critically and honestly on the work you have done on this project. How have you challenged yourself? How have you incorporated what you have learned about literature in your own writing? Have you learned something about how, when, where, and why you learn?
